Hanasaari power plant
The coal-fired Hanasaari B power plant was completed in 1974. As in other power plants in Helsinki, energy is produced in environmentally friendly cogeneration of electricity and heat. The output capacity of the plant is 220 MW of electricity and 445 MW of district heat.
The power plant A that used to be located in the area has been dismantled. The coal store will be moved to the silos to be built next to the power plant as the southern point of the area will be restored for residential use.
Presently, a separate peak-load and reserve heating plant is being built in front of the power plant to generate district heat at times when the production of Helsingin Energia's own power plants is not sufficient. The new heating plant will ensure distribution of district heat to the new residential areas to be built in the city centre.
The Hanasaari area includes Helsinki's first power plant, the Suvilahti steam power plant, commissioned in 1909 and decommissioned as the power plant B was completed. This industrial facility has been classified as an architecturally and historically significant building and has since been renovated and leased. Plans have been made for cultural utilisation of the area.
