Multi-fuel power plant

In 2007, Pohjolan Voima, Helsingin Energia and VTT launched a project on a new, efficient and environmentally friendly power plant concept. The requirements of the plant are high efficiency, low emissions, flexibility in terms of the use of various fuels, and fast regulatability.

The project includes a study of the technical implementation, competitiveness and environmental impact assessment of a large 500−700-MW multi-fuel power plant based on the latest technology. At the same time, a carbon capture and storage solution will also be sought.

The fuels envisaged for the plant include wood, field biomasses and sorted waste in addition to natural gas and coal. The plan aims to maximise the share of renewable energy.

When implemented, the growing energy demand can be met by the investment.

The project duration is 2−3 years.
