Finland’s first public on-street recharging point for electric vehicles is in Kamppi
Helsingin Energia has opened Finland’s first public on-street recharging point for electric vehicles at Runeberginkatu 1, Kamppi, Helsinki. The on-street recharging point was implemented using Ensto’s new recharging point, which utilises mobile technology. A more extensive recharging system is planned for later, based on experiences gained from the project.
Helsingin Energia is currently conducting a research project mapping the electric vehicle scenario in the Helsinki area up to 2030, particularly with regard to recharging technologies and recharging infrastructure.
The considerable growth of electric vehicle use in the next few decades is taken into account in the planning of the Helsinki area electricity network and power consumption forecasts. The Aalto University School of Science and Technology is also taking part in the research.
About five billion kilometres are driven every year in the capital area road traffic, a large proportion of it in cars. If half of this distance was driven in rechargeable electric cars, the power requirement would be about 500 GWh, which is equivalent to about 10% of the total power consumption of Helsinki. When completed, the new marine wind farm projects of Suomen Merituuli Oy, jointly owned by Helsingin Energia and EPV Energia Oy, will cover all the power needed by road traffic in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area many times over.
