Salmisaari power plants
The operations of the Salmisaari power plant began in 1953. The main production unit is the Salmisaari B power plant. The heat production unit of the A power plant is taken into use according to the heat requirement. Surplus heat energy produced by the power plant is used for the production of district cooling.
The output of the plants is 160 MW of electricity, and the corresponding output of district heat is 480 MW.
The first desulphurisation plant in Finland was launched in Salmisaari in 1987. It removes about 80 per cent of the sulphur dioxide in the plant’s flue gases each year. In the 1990s, the coal combustion technology of the Salmisaari power plant was improved as Helsingin Energia’s own development project. As a result, the nitrogen oxide emissions produced in the plant’s coal combustion have fallen by about 50%.
The international environmental certificate ISO 14001 was granted to the Salmisaari power plant in 2000. The coal used by the plant has been stored in an underground rock cavern since 2004.
