Development of the electricity network
In the Helsinki Metropolitan Area, about 5,500 kilometres of electric cables are used for electricity transmission and distribution. Most of the cables are located underground. Cabling improves the security of electricity supply and it is also a more effective electricity transmission solution from the viewpoint of the landscape than overhead power lines. Some of the substations in Helsinki are also located underground.
The location of distribution substations and electricity cabinets has been planned in accordance with the requirements of the cityscape. The development of electricity network operations suitable for the urban landscape has been essential in the operations.
Environmentally friendly development
Development projects in the last few years have included the replacement of the transmission line between the substations of Salmisaari and Meilahti in Helsinki in 2003. The transmission line pylons were redesigned and named 'Antti's Footsteps'.
In summer 2005, a nature management plan was ordered for the 110-kV high-voltage line corridors.
The electricity distribution of the eastern side of the capital will be reinforced by building a new power line connection from Länsisalmi to Vuosaari . The project is scheduled for about 2015.
