Lighting in Helsinki
Helsinki is illuminated by a total of 79,000 street lights. Measured by the number of lights, the city can be regarded as a well lit-up and safe place to live and travel in at all times of the day or year.
In the past few years, more emphasis has been given to the aspects of lighting that enhance the comfort of living; key buildings, bridges, statues and parks of the city have also been lit up in addition to streets. Skilful lighting can create a new face for Helsinki and bring its unique shapes and colours to light also in the dark period.
The design and maintenance of public outdoor lighting in Helsinki is the responsibility of Helsingin Energia on the basis of orders by the Public Works Department of the City of Helsinki.
Helsingin Energia has also designed and implemented works of light art in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area.
