Remote reading

In Helsinki, the remote reading of electricity consumption will significantly expand, when Helen Sähköverkko Oy, which is responsible for electricity transmission and distribution in the region, replaces the old electricity meters in the inner city with remotely read meters. The project will be implemented in the years 2008-2010, and after its completion, about half of the electricity meters in the Helsinki region will be connected to the remote reading system. The target is to have all electricity meters in Helsinki connected to the remote reading system by 2013.

Customers will be informed about installations and related schedules as the date of meter replacement approaches.  Installation of meters does not require any special measures of customers, nor does it result in any costs. If the meter is located inside the residence, a convenient time for meter installation will be agreed on with the customer.

A remotely read electricity meter makes it possible to read an electricity meter and control its functions through a remote connection. The objective of changing over to remote reading is to improve customer service and the efficiency of metering and customer processes as well as the condition management of metering equipment.

The new electricity meters will bring the following benefits, among others:
- The meter reader will no longer call at the customer to read the meter, nor does the customer have to report readings (which he or she may have had to do before)
- A more clear-cut electricity bill than before
- An opportunity for closer monitoring of electricity consumption data through the online services provided by our website.
We will inform our customers about the new services and opportunities, such as a change-over to billing according to measured consumption, by sending them a letter a soon as the remotely read meters have been installed and the new services have become available.

The meters will be installed by our cooperation partners Mitox Oy and Eltel Networks Oy.
