How much does electricity cost?

The total price of electricity consists of the sale of electricity, the distribution of electricity and the electricity tax.

Of the total electricity price, you can put out to competitive tender the proportion of electricity sales, while the distribution price is determined by the distribution network operator to whose area the electricity is bought.  In Helsinki, Helen Sähköverkko Oy is in charge of electricity distribution.

How is the price of electricity determined?

The market prices of electricity are determined on the Nord Pool, i.e. the Nordic Power Exchange.   Both physical electricity and financial electricity products are traded on the Power Exchange.  Helsingin Energia procures the electricity to be sold by it from the market through the Power Exchange.

What factors affect the market price of electricity?

The Nordic water reservoirs at any given time are the key factor affecting the price level of wholesale electricity.  In addition, the EU-level emissions trading scheme launched at the start of 2005 and the development of fuels prices and other production costs impact the trend in the wholesale electricity price. Owing to the combined effect of all these factors, fluctuations in the wholesale price are likely to become even sharper than before.
