Helsingin Energia’s electricity price is among the lowest in Europe

Household Electricity Price Index for Europe published

The new international Household Electricity Price Index for Europe (HEPI) was published today. The index shows that the price of electricity sold to households by Helsingin Energia is clearly among the lowest in Europe. This is despite the fact that the price of electricity paid by households in Europe has generally fallen since January this year as a result of reduced market prices.

HEPI is an impartial index comparing European electricity prices, updated every month. It is implemented by the Austrian energy authority (E-control) and VaasaETT Global Energy Think Tank, which specialises in global energy studies. The index includes 15 capital cities of the European Union, taking into account the major energy companies and their competitors in these cities.

The Household Electricity Price Index for Europe indicates that the price of household electricity charged by Helsingin Energia is among the lowest in Europe, together with Athens: Helsingin Energia’s price for one kilowatt-hour is EUR 11.62 (Athens 11.43 cents). Households in Copenhagen pay the most for their electricity (30.88 cents/kWh). Helsingin Energia’s customers pay only about one-third of the Danish tariffs for their household electricity.

The price index also measures the prices charged by competitors compared with the companies operating in the capital cities. The comparison shows that switching from Helsingin Energia to a competitive company would not provide any tariff gains.

The price index will be constantly updated. E-control and VaasaETT Global Energy Think Tank will publish their next update in June 2009.
