Hydropower plants produced a record amount of energy
In 2008, the Mankala hydropower plant produced a total of 194.1 GWh of energy, and production in Ahvenkoski amounted to 157.5 GWh, in Klåsarö 33.3 GWh, and in Ediskoski 2.9 GWh. These energy production amounts were the highest in the history of the plants, with the exception of Ediskoski.
Total precipitation in 2008 in the Päijänne catchment area was 121% of the long-term average. Monthly precipitation varied from very dry to abundant.
At the beginning of the year, the water level of Lake Päijänne was only just above the long-term average. Abundant rain in January soon made the level rise. Despite the exceptionally high discharges throughout the year, Lake Päijänne was 50 cm above the long-term average at the end of the year, with the discharge from Päijänne as high as 420 m3/s. Total annual precipitation was 324 m3/s, which is 135% of the long-term average.
Maintenance measures were carried out during the year, the most significant of which were the investment in the 110 kV switchyard extension and transformer at Ahvenkoski and the closing of the sluiceway with a concrete wall at the Mankala hydropower plant. Measures for the modernisation and upgrade of the Ahvenkoski hydropower plant were launched with the inspection of 2-turbine waterways.
Fry of rainbow trout and lake trout, as well as pike perch and grayling were planted at Mankala to comply with obligations. Sea trout, salmon and powan were planted at Ediskoski.
Oy Mankala Ab operates on the absorption principle. The company's net sales totalled EUR 24 million.
