Environmental management

Environmental impacts closely followed

To keep environmental impacts under control, Helsingin Energia uses the ISO 14001 environmental management system for power plants, the environmental manuals for business operations, energy efficiency systems, and the Green Office environmental programme. Continuous improvement of the efficiency of our own activity is closely monitored.

In the operating year 2008, the operating system of the heating plants and the district heating network was completed to comply with the criteria of the ISO 1400. Power consumption in information technology and recycling of electronic scrap became an object of critical observation and a subject in the new environmental handbook.

Helsingin Energia's environmental management was developed and clarified with the completion of an overall description of the Helen Group's environmental management (IsoHelen) in operating year 2008.

Production safety secured

The Safety Technology Authority has ensured the technical safety of Helsingin Energia's power plants. The power plants are so called SEVESO plants, concerning which safety surveys are required for the Salmisaari and Vuosaari plants and an operating principles document for the Hanasaari plant. The Hanasaari operating principles document was revised in the operating year 2008.

In collaboration with the Vuosaari and Salmisaari power plants, the Rescue Department drew up the rescue plans pertaining to safety surveys. The intervals of the formerly annual periodic inspections performed by the Safety Technology Authority were lengthened, and the following inspections will be carried out in 2011 at the Vuosaari power plant and in 2012 at the Salmisaari power plant.
