Development of energy operations
Multifuel power plant and offshore wind farm projects made progress
The tasks of the energy operations development unit include energy procurement projects and feasibility studies, monitoring the drafting of national and EU-level regulations on the operating environment, and the development of risk management at Helsingin Energia. The unit carries out close co-operation with HelenPower and HelenPortfolioManagement. Tasks in 2008 included development of HelenPower's financial monitoring models and adapting its financial practices to the new organisation.
The joint venture of Helsingin Energia and Pohjolan Voima Oy on the development of a multifuel power plant concept continued. The result of the development work is a power plant using biomass as its energy source, with natural gas and coal used as co-fuels.
Helsingin Energia and Etelä-Pohjanmaan Voima Oy established a joint venture, Suomen Merituuli Oy, with the objective of building two wind farms of a significant size (500-1,000 MW) off the coast of the Gulf of Bothnia and the Gulf of Finland.
Suomen Merituuli Oy has signed a reservation agreement with Metsähallitus on two sea areas for building the wind farms. One of the areas is located in Siipyy in the sea area between Kristiinankaupunki and Pori, and the other in Inkoo on the Gulf of Finland. According to plans, wind power production in the reserved areas can be started in 2012-2014. The energy operations development unit was an active participant in the operation of Suomen Merituuli Oy in the year under review.
