HelenService
Turnover and sales to external customers increased
The profitability of HelenService's business operations exceeded the level anticipated. Turnover totalled EUR 37.6 million, up 23% over the previous year. The utilisation rate of resources was high and there was a significant increase in the use of subcontractors, compared to the year before. Service sales to external customers increased by 21%.
Among the most significant work objects during the review year were the basic maintenance of energy generation and distribution systems, modernisation of steam turbine 4 of Helsingin Energia's Hanasaari B power plant, life-cycle extension maintenance of gas turbine 2 of Vuosaari A power plant, basic maintenance of the steam turbine and generator of Vattenfall Lämpö Oy's Vanaja power plant, the delivery project for the 20 kV electrical system of Oy Gustav Paulig Ab's Vuosaari Coffee Roastery, maintenance of the cooling water pump of Lahti Energia Oy's Kymijärvi power plant, as well as the basic maintenance and alteration of Vieskan Voima Oy's steam turbine.
Our focus areas were improvement of competence and occupational safety
Vocational competence in maintenance was upgraded and increased with the aid of both the apprenticeship system and external recruitments. In the heated labour market situation, however, the apprenticeship system was the main channel for new professionals to enter the field. In order to raise the level of maintenance planning, the planning resources were increased. A training programme that will continue until autumn 2009 was started in the review year in order to train superiors who bear the main responsibility for development for the challenges of the future.
We continued to pay special attention to occupational safety, and we succeeded in making the weakened occupational safety performance that had started in 2007 take a turn for the better in the operating year. The actual accident frequency and the number of absences due to industrial accidents were clearly lower than in the previous year. There is still plenty of work to do before the objective of zero accidents is reached, however.
As in Helsingin Energia as a whole, also we at HelenService introduced a new development tool, the practice of self-assessment, which was carried out under the control of Excellence Finland. The results and experiences of the first assessment were positive, providing us with a good foundation for follow-on work.
HelenService is responsible for producing the services required by the maintenance of Helsingin Energia's production and distribution systems. HelenService also provides maintenance products to other companies. HelenService had 381 employees at the end of 2008.
