Helen starts refurbishment of district heating network in Töölönlahti

Helen is modernising a 60-year-old section of the district heating network at the north end of Töölönlahti Bay. Due to the worksite, there will be special traffic arrangements in Helsinginkatu as from 19 April.

Helsinginkadun työmaa

District heating pipes run along this section of Helsinginkatu under the lane leading away from the city centre. Due to the worksite, vehicle traffic will be diverted to the current cycle lane, and cyclists will be directed to the pedestrian way on the shore of Töölönlahti Bay. There will be no changes to vehicle lanes or pedestrian and cycle lanes towards the city centre, or to the tram routes.

The work will be carried out mainly on weekdays between 7am and 7pm. Any exceptional working times will be reported separately on the website helen.fi.

The works will start on Monday, 19 April 2021, with changes to the traffic arrangements. Excavation work in the area will start once the special traffic arrangements have been carried out. The worksite will be completed by the end of July.

Facts:

  • The number of leaks in the district heating network in 2020 was record low. Long-term development of heating networks is bearing fruit.
  • By utilising asset-related data, investments in the district heating network are allocated to networks at the end of their life cycle and to any risk areas.
  • Preventive maintenance tasks enable repairs of any potentially faulty sections before customers are aware of them in the form of power cuts.
  • The current district heating network is an excellent basis for all future heat production solutions.
