Frequently asked questions about Smart Control of Heat Pumps
Smart Control of Heat Pumps maintains the desired temperature in your home. To maintain the desired temperature, Smart Control of Heat Pumps looks for periods of time when heating-related electricity consumption can be reduced by taking advantage of your home’s ability to retain heat, as well as the effect of weather conditions, such as sunlight, on the indoor temperature. This is referred to as the optimisation of heating, which can generate up to 10% in savings on a heat pump’s electricity consumption. The average effect of optimisation ranges from 4% to 8%.
Once the AI-powered control solution has learned the heating requirements of your home or property, the smart control will look for the lowest-priced periods to heat the home. When the service automatically shifts the heat pump's electricity consumption to the lowest-priced periods of the day, you can save as much as 12% in electricity prices.
The table shows examples of savings for example locations:
| Ground source heat pump | Air-to-water heat pump | |
| Annual electricity consumption | 7500 kWh | 9000 kWh |
| Heating costs | 1000 € | 1200 € |
| Estimated savings | 200 € | 240 € |
The examples in the table have been calculated using the following data:
- A detached house with geothermal heating or an air-to-water heat pump as the primary heating method
- Electricity distribution and taxes, total: 6.0 cents/kWh
- Average energy price of exchange electricity: September 2023–August 2024 6.5 cents/kWh and during the heating season (October–March) 8.5 cents/kWh
- Rated capacity of the heat pump: 2.5–14.5 kWh
- Heat pump operating time at full capacity: 3,500–5,500 h
Smart Control of Heat Pumps is based on weather forecasts and the system learning about your building's ability to retain heat and the living habits of the residents of your home. The control solution uses machine learning algorithms to predict the home's heating-related electricity consumption and determine the optimal settings for heating and cooling. It is also able to schedule electricity consumption based on fluctuations in price.
Smart optimisation makes it possible to reduce electricity consumption and the related costs without compromising on living comfort. When the control system is configured for "Maximum savings", the change in indoor temperature is at most +- 2 degrees. There are three levels to choose from: Comfort, Balanced or Maximum savings. The smart control actions carried out can be monitored via the Kapacity.io Cloud service.
No, you do not. Smart Control of Heat Pumps is a digital service that can be activated in a matter of minutes. The prerequisite for using the service is that your heat pump offers internet connectivity and is on the list of compatible appliances.
You can check the list of compatible heat pumps above.
Yes, you can use your appliance as normal while smart control is activated. You can control your appliance and the temperature settings using its control application or directly via the appliance, as you have done previously. Smart Control of Heat Pumps receives information on the desired temperature and the changes you have made to it, and takes this information into account in its optimisation functions.
Yes. Heat pumps are precise appliances, which is why the smart control always operates within the limits specified by the manufacturer. The control is not based on switching the appliance on and off. Instead, it optimises the operation of your appliance on a brand- and model-specific basis, taking the manufacturer’s guidelines into account. Smart Control of Heat Pumps implemented by Kapacity always prioritises the safety of your appliance and the comfort of your home, making it a safe choice for your heat pump.
Smart Control of Heat Pumps requires an internet connection to operate. If the connection is lost but the heat pump is still running, the appliance will remain in the same state it was when the connection was lost. In the case of a power outage, smart control resumes automatically when the heat pump powers up and reconnects to the internet.
It does! AI plays a key role in Smart Control of Heat Pumps. It learns how your home’s structures retain and release heat into the indoor air, how different weather conditions affect your home’s indoor temperature, and how your family’s daily routines and living habits affect things.
AI combines what it has learned with the weather forecast and upcoming electricity prices, and optimises your heating according to all of the data it has gathered. This reduces the excessive heating of your home and also generates savings through reduced electricity consumption. Smart Control of Heat Pumps is a significantly more comprehensive control solution than purely price-based control.
