District heating and electricity networks are upgraded – new worksites are started at a record rate
There will be an increased amount of network refurbishment, renewal and construction work carried out in both the district heating and the electricity network during the winter and spring season of 2019 in anticipation of Finland's EU Presidency starting in July.
The refurbishment and renewal work on the district heating and electricity networks is part of normal network maintenance to ensure that homes will be kept warm and the lights switched on. The growing city also needs new sections of network. Finland’s EU Presidency in late 2019 will restrict the amount of work carried out in the street areas. As a result, construction and maintenance work on the district heating and electricity networks in Helsinki will take place in the early part of the year.
This winter, Helen will have half as many district heating worksites as in the previous years. We will also stagger works over the entire year, says Helen’s Construction Manager Lauri Utriainen.
Utriainen points out that the worksites are always strictly scheduled according to each work stage. A worksite may seem inactive at times, but it is waiting for the next work stages. In the winter, periods of extremely low temperatures may delay the progress of worksites because sufficient heating in properties must be safeguarded also during maintenance work.

Works on the electricity network in the spring
The worksites of Helen Electricity Network Ltd will be launched more extensively in March–April once the ground has thawed. The electricity network in the city centre area will be renewed at an exceptional rate this year. Many of the tasks to be carried out on the electricity network will be done together with outdoor lighting by the City of Helsinki. Excavations will mainly be made on pavements and along pedestrian and cycle routes as the electricity network runs underneath them.
