Helen’s Nationwide Energy Survey: Nuclear Power Is Finns’ Preferred Form of Electricity Generation
According to the study, more than half of Finns (53%) consider increasing nuclear power to be an important part of Finland’s electricity production.
When respondents were asked to choose only one form of electricity generation, nuclear power ranked as the top choice, followed by wind and solar power in second and third place, respectively.
The results indicate that Finns view the energy system as a whole, where nuclear power complements renewable energy sources.
“The broad support reflects the established role of nuclear power as part of low-emission, reliable and diversified energy production in Finland. The steady, weather-independent output of nuclear energy also enables the efficient utilisation of renewable generation as part of a flexible energy system and strengthens Finland’s security of supply,” says Pekka Tolonen, CEO of Helen Nuclear Power Ltd.
Helen’s subsidiary, Helen Nuclear Power Ltd, is currently assessing the prerequisites for constructing an SMR (small modular reactor) plant in Helsinki. Potential locations include the Salmisaari and Vuosaari power plant areas, as well as the Norrberget area in Östersundom. The ongoing plant supplier tender includes around half a dozen Western technology options for heat-only as well as combined heat and power production. Helen also holds a 10% ownership stake in the Olkiluoto nuclear power plants.
About Helen’s Nationwide Energy Survey:
The data was collected by Verian through an online panel survey in March 2026. A total of 1,010 respondents participated, and the results are representative of the adult population of mainland Finland (margin of error ±3.1 percentage points).
